The Kiha 20 series is a general-purpose diesel car that was introduced in 1957 with a larger body than the Kiha 10 series. The Kiha 22 series was a specialized vehicle for extremely cold regions, with small double-glazed windows and a deck over the boarding doors, and was mainly used in Hokkaido and northern Tohoku.
